My Chemical Romance treated fans to blood pumping renditions off Shoutweb's 2004 Record of the Year Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge igniting the run-down venue with specific instructions to "blow the roof of this place" leading into their chart-topping radio hit "I'm Not Okay". In what may have been confused for possible Oscar weekend support for the animated film The Incredibles, frontman Gerard Way donned a black make-up mask and blood red tie. The New Jersey native superhero has many talents including the ability to get even the rafter seats on their feet and singing along. Not lax for material, the entertaining singer storyteller instructed his followers to "clap from the front to the very back" and "from the side to the side" before leading into "Thank You For The Venom". Eerie vocals for "here comes the bride all dressed in white" were followed up with a crowd participation event in the “home of Bon Jovi” to lift high all lighters and cell phones to introduce "The Ghost Of You".

Guitarists Ray Toro and Frankie Iero were sporting bulletproof vests. The band's set was a tribute to "our brothers and sisters on the road" and climaxed with the song "Helena" that was met with crowd screams on the chorus line "so long and goodnight".

Five emo fast-rockers from New Jersey insist they are not OK. OK?

By Nick Duerden

Blender, August 2004

It takes frontman Gerard Way less than two minutes to mention his therapist.

We’re talking about My Chemical Romance’s new album, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, and the fact that, within four days of its completion, the band (Way, his brother Mikey, Ray Toro, Matt Pelissier and Frank Iero) went on tour because Way is terrified of staying at home.

“It’s important to keep up momentum,” he says, as the tour bus approaches Seattle. “When I’m home I get stagnant, I go crazy and have to see my therapist. Being on the road keeps me busy.” Having traveled the breadth of the country these past six weeks, he looks exhausted but happy. “I’m OK when I’m busy.”

Way formed MCR three years ago in his native New Jersey after his previous job as an animation artist was proving ruinous to his mental health: “The animation business is even more cutthroat and corrupt than the music industry. I felt like I was throwing my life away.”

The quintet’s debut, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love came out in 2002, but it is this month’s successor that promises to elevate them into genuine Next Big Things. Three Cheers is equal parts Nine Inch Nails and the Misfits, a hard, fast, impressively ravaged rock album that, says Way, earned its Parental Guidance sticker not for bad language (“there’s only one f-word on the whole fucking thing”) but for “very fucked up, very dark” content.

“Morrissey is a huge influence on me,” says the 27-year-old, “and I hope our songs are uplifting like his, even though the lyrics are pretty fucked up. The most telling song, I guess, is ‘I’m Not Okay (I Promise).’ There’s nothing wrong with me specifically, but I do get depressed a lot. My therapist says I have a fear of success, but that’s the beauty of this band. This is the first thing I’ve done that I haven’t tried to sabotage. It has helped me overcome so many problems.”

He flashes his tired grin once more.

“I will overcome my fear of success,” he insists. “All this self-doubt bullshit is a thing of the past, trust me.”

If “Death Rockers” My Chemical Romance say they’re superheroes, then who is Blender to argue? We just don’t remember spider-man having so many problems with drink, drugs and swearing in front of kids.

By Dorian Lynskey

Blender, April 2005

One day last August, Gerard Way boarded a plane to Japan with the gnawing conviction that he might not be coming back. Over the past year, the 27-year-old singer for the rock group My Chemical Romance had got it into his head that he had to be drunk to perform, and then needed Xanax to switch off his brain afterwards, and the combination was making him suicidally depressed. Way didn’t like being suicidally depressed, so he’d often add cocaine to the mix. That’s when his mood really got black. He spent the days before the flight saying goodbye to friends in New Jersey, just in case.

In Japan, Way spent all his time drunk. Before the final Tokyo show, he got so trashed on Heinekens and vodka tonics that he realized, even as he was performing, that he wouldn’t be able to remember anything about it the next day. After he came off-stage he spent half an hour throwing up in a garbage can, until there was nothing coming up except bile. Tonight, he thought to himself, his hair caked with vomit, I’ve drunk my last drink.

“It was a vicious circle,” he says matter-of-factly. “I needed it to function but it made me want to kill myself. It made me extremely unpredictable and dangerous to myself. I didn’t want it to get to the point where it became like a VH1 Behind the Music where they show this really bad picture of me 30 pounds overweight, throwing up on the floor in Berlin. I didn’t want that to happen to this band.”

Way’s cold-turkey flight back to the band’s home of Belleville, New Jersey, was excruciating — almost 7,000 miles of skin-crawling, sweat-soaked willies. “I got really emotional outside the airport when we landed. I didn’t know if I was going to see these guys again.” He went straight to his therapist and booked into Alcoholics Anonymous, knowing that in the same week My Chemical Romance had to replace their drummer, film a video and start their tour. And you thought you’d had a hard week at work.

“We got through the hard shit,” says Way. “This is the easy part.” Any fears last summer that My Chemical Romance were going to implode into obscurity were knocked flat by their swaggering teen-dysfunction anthem “I’m Not Okay (I Promise).” Inspired by the high school experiences of Way and his friends, it delivers angst-rock verities with a knowing wink, not to mention the kind of melody that ignites careers. The tongue-in-cheek video, filmed in the same L.A. high school as Donnie Darko, depicted MCR as proudly geeky misfits. It was a role that didn’t require much rehearsal.

Way calls My Chemical Romance’s music “death rock.” Others have tagged it goth punk or emo. Some endearing individuals have overcome genre confusion by simply calling MCR faggots. “Our guitarist Frank met somebody who said, ‘How do you feel when people stop liking your band because they find out you’re gay?’” says Way, curling his lip with pointed amusement.

To the more meat-headed members of the Warped tour fraternity, some eyeliner and the occasional ambivalent lyric (in “You Know What They Do to Guys Like Us in Prison,” Gerard sings “I’ll kiss your lips again” to a male character) are too much to process, but Way hopes MCR can change a few minds.

“We’ve always tried to switch the way people think about rock bands,” he says. “That [lyric] puts a dividing line between people. Are you on our side and you want to be different or are you on that side and you want to throw a football at my head?”

Read all about the childhoods that spurred all of this dysfunction in the April issue of Blender, on newsstands now!

When Warner Brothers/Reprise invited me to come talk with Gerard from My Chemical Romance about their new album at their record release show, how could I have refused?

The show was in their home state of NJ, packed with 1300 cheering fans. What made the show even cooler for me was featured artist, Nightmare of You was on the bill too! (NOY is still currently unsigned and have been playing with My Chem. Good for them!) I love when Equal Music bands get together!

Is their latest apart of a trilogy? Front man Gerard explains. He also reveals what why it didn't turn out to be the concept record they had planned it to be and what are they doing in Tokyo with The Beastie Boys? (Original interview from Oct. 31, 2003 follows this latest one from June)

DM: When we spoke last you guys were shopping for a producer. Who did you wind up working with and why?

Gerard: We wound up working with Howard Benson. A big reason was because he contacted us which is always very exciting. He was very enthusiastic about the project. It's not so much that he got what world we came from because he's worked with bands like P.O.D. and Blindside which is a completely different universe but he got what we were trying to do with the music and so we connected on a lot of levels.

DM: How was this experience different from working with Alex (Eyeball Records) and Geoff (Thursday [Island/Def Jam]) front man?

Gerard: That whole experience was hanging with friends and having a really fun time. There wasn't a lot of money or pressure. But then this experience didn't have that much pressure either which was weird. It was very a positive experience that had a really good flow. But yeah it was very different.

DM: You said in October that while you were finishing the first record you knew what you wanted the second one to be called (which is their latest, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge) and at the time since you knew the name for the second one you had an idea for what you wanted the third record to be called, although there's not going to be a trilogy so how do you know? Where's the connection with that?

Gerard: It's the kind of connection where you kind of always have a sense of what you're band is doing and where it's headed. I think we have a good idea of kind of like what the first record should be.It should be fast and dirty and cheap. Then the second one you really up the ante and really go for it with this one. The third one you try to explore new avenues. We ended up doing a lot of that on this record. We actually ended up being way more experiemantal than we thought we were going to be. It sounded good to us so we said let's keep doing it.

DM: To jump ahead, do you know what the next one's going to be called?

Gerard: From this experience I learned I shouldn't do that anymore because it locks you into something. And this record wound up being half a concept record because so much happened in our lives that when it came time to write lyrics I found out that it was less ficiton and more fact. So it's a very loose concept record. I want to see what happens for the third one and actually not plan anything out. I think that will be interesting because- it's not that we're calculated but we always kind of know where we're headed and kind of vibe on it. For the next one I kind of don't want to have that.

DM: What kind of mood do you feel like the new album has?

Gerard: I just started listening to it as a piece now, not just bits here and there it's really about loss. The first record was more about pain, misery and agression and violence. Although the lyrics can be disturbing at points, it's really about loss. In the end that's what it wound up being more about instead of some story. You can pick it out of at least four or five of the songs. Even the performances that everyone gives too makes it feel like it's really about loss.

DM: Do you feel like it's dark?

Gerard: Yeah. It's already been called that by a lot of people. We got a parental advisory without even having more than one curse in it. I think it's dark but I think it's a lot more positive than the first record.

DM: Yeah, I remember you saying that you felt the ups were going to be more up and the downs more down.

Gerard: Yeah and they really ended up being like that. But, there's definitely more moments of positivity and celebration than on the first record.

DM: What are some of difference of working with an indie and working with a major?

Gerard: This record was really painless so I can't truthfully answer that as a band that's in our position. We are really rare case of-- it was very similar to the first record where we did exactly what we wanted and luckily because they knew who we were when they signed us that's exactly what they wanted. There wasn't much of a difference other than the fact that there was obviously a lot more deadlines and a lot more pressure to get things done on time. That was the big difference but that was actually it.

DM: You're going to Tokyo soon for Summer Sonic Fest. You must be excited.

Gerard:Yeah, it's awesome, we get to play with The Beastie Boys and I've never seen them.

DM: What's going on for you guys for the rest of the year?

Gerard: Pretty much straight touring till the record cycle is over. It's usually about eighteen months from the time you start a record until you're done touring on it and should be starting a new one. There's already stuff I really want to write. I want to start immediately. As soon as we finished this I wanted to just do another. We're very much a live band but at the same time you get in the studio and you remember you're very much all songwriters and we had forgotten that part of us. I'm still in that head fix where I want to write more songs.

DM: Maybe you can still do that while you're on the road.

Gerard: Yeah, we plan to do it on Warped Tour. It will be our first time really on a bus so we're going to have more space and we'll be comfortable. Right ater that we're going back to a van so Warped Tour is really going to be the time that we write.

My Chemical Romance
by Danielle Moskowitz

October 31, 2003

Juxtaposing raw vocals and a punk edge against riffs suddenly gone melodic, My Chemical Romance takes you from upbeat drumming in one measure to a moment where you find yourself lost in slow, somber guitars the next. Listen closely as their vocalist Gerard reveals glimpses of himself through his brutally honest lyrics that hold traces of darkness around them.

DM: The bands success seems to have come very quickly. How long were you a band before signing to Eyeball Records?

Gerard: Let’s see—January is when we started playing as a band. We signed around our third or fourth show. It’s been quick since the beginning.

DM: What were you doing with your lives before the band took off?

Gerard: I was doing animation in the city [New York]. I was actually doing toy design in Hoboken [New Jersey], and Frankie was going to school, Mikey was going to school, Otter was a mechanic, and Ray was delivering film I believe and interning and stuff like that for film. We all just weren’t happy doing what we were doing, ya know?

DM: Geoff from the band Thursday and Alex from Eyeball [Records] I know played a big part in the recording of your last CD.

Gerard: Yeah, definitely.

DM: Are they going to be playing any part on your CD that will be coming out?

Gerard: I don’t think so. Sometimes you want to use the same people sometimes you want to see what would happen with other people. I’m sure they’ll hear it and we’ll ask their opinions.

DM: So they’re not going to help produce?

Gerard: Nah.

DM: What made you guys decide that a major was the next best move?

Gerard: It was one of those things where everything else was moving really fast but we had been able to keep up with it, ya know? We had been able to keep up with the shows that we were getting which were like going from playing basements to playing in front of 10,000 people with Jimmy Eat World. So it went from that to that, and it seemed like a very natural progression. And although a lot of people think it seemed quick, all that talk and all that nonsense was happening before our record even came out. It was like, we basically not fought them off, but said hey we’re going to be a band and do that, ya know? And then when we’re ready…Actually it was a lot longer process than most bands that are getting signed today.

DM: What made Reprise the best label for you guys?

Gerard: It was the best company. They were very familiar with us. We had a lot of fans at the company before we had signed. We had a lot of people helping out before we had signed.

DM: And they understand where you guys wanted to go musically, as a band?

Gerard: Yeah, exactly. That was the big thing. They knew where we wanted to go, they knew how we wanted to do things, and they were going to let us do it our way. Very low pressure type thing. Just kind of let us be us and you distribute us.

DM: When is the new album due out?

Gerard: We’re hoping it will come out in about in about spring. We’re going to record in January. We don’t have a producer yet. We’re looking at a few people and they’re looking at us. So it’s kind of that whole game right now.

DM: Do you have a title yet?

Gerard: Yeah, it’s called Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. And it was a title that… we pretty much known the title for the first record before it was finished and as soon as we were done with that I kind of knew what I wanted the title to be for the second. So it’s kind of in the process where I kind of know what I want the third to be too.

DM: Is it a trilogy type thing?

Gerard: No. This one’s different from the last and it’s more fictitious, but it’s still heartfelt. And it’s more of a concept record than the last one, where the last one was more of an autobiography. But the next one’s more of a concept album about a person; the next one after that I don’t what know what it will be.

DM: While you guys have been on tour you’ve been playing new songs live and they seem to be heavier. Would you say that is the direction you guys are going in?

Gerard: Well, yeah. The heavier stuffs heavier. The heavy stuff we did before is definitely heavier now. Those same elements are there; we’re just spending a little more time on the heavy stuff. But at the same time I think there’s way more melody. Maybe not in the stuff we’re playing out live, but it’s more violently happy. But it’s also very ironically bleak ya know, as far as tone goes.

DM: Track seven on your CD [I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love] is called Skylines and Turnstiles. Is it true that it was inspired by September 11?

Gerard: Yeah, and in fact that event happening was a big thing about why we started the band because, I was on my to a meeting with Cartoon Network and then that happened and I was like what the fuck am I doing with my life.

DM: You saw it happen? You were in the city?

Gerard: Yeah, I was in Hoboken, on the way there. I was right across the river and I was on my way in right around that, very close to that area, but more around Canal, and I was like what the fuck am I doing?

DM: It made you feel like life’s too short and you need to go for what you want?

Gerard: Yeah, yeah exactly. Like obviously life is way too short, you don’t know when your numbers coming and I also felt like I wasn’t making a difference at all, ya know what I mean?

DM: There are a couple theories circulating about your repeated mention of vampires in your lyrics. Can you clear that up?

Gerard: It’s a metaphor for being in your twenties and getting sucked into that singles, alcoholic nightlife culture, ya know what I mean? It’s interesting, because you’ll find that a lot of bands use the supernatural as a gimmick, and that’s really all it is, it’s just like horror punk, and that’s all it is. We’re not really into vampires. I like to wear black, but…
A Way with words: The imagination of ultra-stylish vocalist Gerard Way fuels the dark imagery and lyrics of My Chemical Romance´s most recent album.
Guitarist Ray Toro shreds some wire at the SOMA during one of My Chemical Romance´s gigs on the Nintendo Fushion Tour.

Gerard Way knows how to make an impression.

As I approached the My Chemical Romance vocalist for an interview at the SOMA last month, the first thing I noticed was in regard to his appearance. He wore what appeared to be a valet parker's jacket (which he adorned with a white and black striped tie for the show), and his hands had Xs etched on them.

Luckily, his musical sense is as good as his fashion sense. With the emotion and ingenuity he brings to his band, you should be hearing a lot of talk about them, and Way in particular. Initially, he was modest about My Chemical Romance's explosive success with its new album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge.

"It seems pretty fast to a lot more people than us," Way said. "Actually, it was really quick. We've only been a band for three years. So what we've accomplished in those three years has been pretty amazing."

Amazing would be an understatement. The band played only three shows before the East Coast label Eyeball picked them up - the same record label that originally picked up the Jersey-based band Thursday. Having left the independent market for a much larger one, My Chemical Romance signed to Warner Bros., and then proceeded to achieve the unprecedented.

They not only released a well-orchestrated concept album, but a musically exceptional one as well. A lot of bands falter when they get signed to the majors, but My Chemical Romance stayed true. It didn't rush it or change its sound to produce something with mainstream sensibility. A producer trying to cater to the label or to the radio stations didn't mold it. The album was unique lyrically and musically, and was harder, grimier and more sexually appalling than its last release. Way calls it "violent, unsafe pop music."

"We love pop music and we love aggression, and we wanted to give the pop kind of a darker twinge ... I'm obsessed with death, the beauty of it and the horror of it and the tragedy of it. We all knew it was going to be a large element of the new record."

The band didn't just give it a darker twinge - they painted it black. With a concept album featuring contracts with the devil, murderous rampages and references to oral sex with friends of both genders, it takes you on a dark voyage down the shadowy corridors of a musician's mind, straight to the soul where human secrets lie dormant, waiting for the scars to heal. The band doesn't just push limits with overtly morbid lyrics, but with sexually provocative and graphic lyrics as well.

"Touching on male sexuality is a way to dare people, a way to push limits, boundaries," Way said. "There' s a lot of homophobia, racism and sexism in the punk scene, more than you would think ... we try to push the envelope on sexuality ... maybe they (younger fans) will kind of think differently when they see a gay kid in high school."

And with all of the money, creativity and talk of sex spewing forth, the band didn't forget humility. Way said the band feels blessed and lucky to have achieved so much so quickly, and with so much respect, especially from other musicians. It set out to separate itself in a genre overcrowed with monotonous bands regurgitating a fabricated sound.

"Trends just die and come and go. And we never really felt part of the trend to begin with. So when we made our second record we said, 'We really need to separate ourselves now.'"

But Way also didn't fail to acknowledge the unique opportunity presented to them because of their geographic location.

"Coming from Jersey, we kind of did expect to (be successful outside our state) in a way, but not with playing what we were playing, because we saw a lot of Jersey bands get snatched up by Drive-Thru or other labels. But because of the way we sounded, we didn't expect it - we sounded so different nobody would want to have anything to do with us."

But major label Warner Bros. wanted everything to do with them and their sound. My Chemical Romance has created a style and music sure to outlast many of its peers - not only at Warner Bros., but also elsewhere. So next time you're having a chemical romance, head down to your local record store and pick up My Chemical Romance's Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. You may find yourself hooked on another great, dirty Jersey band.

When My Chemical Romance first arrived with "I Brought You My Bullets You Brought Me Your Love" there's was little to separate them from the flood of emo bands at the time. It was an accomplished album recorded just 3 months after the band formed, but an album that gave little away as to what to expect on the follow up "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge". Propelled to national TV on the back of "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)", a song which goes along the line of thinking that the school days are certainly not the best days of our lives, the album is bursting full of overblown rock classics with each guitar riff and vocal multitracked to an opera sized epic. Designer Magazine editor Alex McCann caught up with MCR's frontman Gerard Way.

Q: You've been out with so many bands previous, How does the Taking Back Sunday tour compare?
A: We've actually been out with Taking Back Sunday twice. They're the sort of band that make you believe in what you do. They have so much fun and they're so grateful for what they have. There's very few bands you can consistently watch for the whole set, but TBS are very spontaneous so it's a joy to watch them every night of the tour. I guess the main difference is there are very few bands that you can feel you're friends enough to go round their house for Christmas or call them up in at four in the morning. TBS are one of the few bands you know that have your back. There have been times we've been on tour with other bands where everything's supposed to be cool, but there's always that underlying tension. We've never had any major problems, but when we're out with TBS or The Used it's like being out on the road with your best friends.

Q: Does it feel strange going from the headline tour to almost taking a step back to the support level again?
A: It was a decision that we had to make. It was easy because it was them, but it wasn't the easiest thing in the world. We have a good thing going in the UK on our own, whereas we support absolutely everyone in the US. I think the thing that swinged it for us is Taking Backing Sunday know what we need and even if they bring out five bands with them every band on that tour gets treated equally. They're very gracious like that.

Q: How has it changed for you as a band from "Bullets" to "Three Cheers...."?
A: Tremendously at this point. Especially in the States. There was actually a time when we thought we were going to be bigger over here, we always felt that the UK had an appreciation for real bands, and things just took off in the US in a way that we couldn't have imagined. Just things like regular MTV specials on the making of our videos and regular time on TRL. In the span of two weeks we'd done Connon O'Brien, Carson Daley and Letterman. We were on Letterman like we were some proper band rather than a little punk band. It's not a problem at the moment, but what we're trying to avoid in the US at the moment is becoming "the band that do the I'm Not Okay song". That's always a danger in that one song takes the band over.

Q: Musically there is a huge leap between the two records. Do you feel like a different band now?
A: The first album was really a good example of a band that wanted to tour a lot and play live. So our concern was just getting something out so the kids could learn the lyrics, sing along with us to our favourite songs and really understand what the band was about. We were only a band 3 months when we recorded it, and I don't want to say it's not the brightest thing to do cos I really love that record, and looking back we probably would have taken a little longer on it. I'm glad we put it out when we did because we found out very early on that we had a very big sound. At that time it was us finding our way. Now we know how to take that sound out of our heads and people say it sounds really polished, but it's still a really raw record.

Q: As you said it is a big bombastic scope to it. Is that what you wanted?
A: A big obnoxious sounding rock record. There was this feeling of bringing a real rock band back. Even when you see us live it sounds as if there's ten guitarists up on stage cos Frank and Ray have so much going on and complement each other so well. They really try to work with everybody as opposed to look at me. Franks has these riffs that play right under what i'm singing and Ray really loves these big power chords that I can just play along inside those. We're definitely a band that is very self aware. We think very much about in terms of what it's going to be like live when we play. There are songs that we flat out wouldn't put on a record if we couldn't play them live.

Q: When you first came out it was easy to call you an emo band, now it's like what are MCR made of?
A: That was actually what we wanted to happen. We were like please, this emo shits got to stop. We were called emo originally because we were a product of our environment. If you'd kinda been from Jersey at the time you'd realize that we were the most different band in Jersey at the time. I just hope that whatever we do it's classified as rock.

Q: When you witness My Chemical Romance live it comes across like the section in Alice Cooper's "Schools Out" where the band drops back and it's just the choir. With MCR it's like that with each and every song?
A: Yeah. It's weird as well because we're not really a singalong band. It's a lot harder for a band like us because there's a lack of repetition and there's more of a confusion thrown in. The kids somehow get these schizophrenic songs that we're writing and it's really nice when you get that moment where the whole room is singing along and believing in you.

Q: Do you see yourself as a singer or a frontman?
A: I think a frontman only because the rest of the band see themselves as performers and not just as musicians. The whole band have this mentality that this could be the last show so I can't just stand there and sing just like they can't just stand there and play. We really go for it and it's nothing we have to try and be contrived about, like when this part comes in make sure everyone's off the ground.

Q: The whole concept of the album changed lyrically from it's original idea to something for more personal
A: The way it happened was because I didn't think i'd be able to sing every night about fictitious things. Even if the things are metaphorical, which occasionally it is on this record, I just wanted to be straight and honest about a lot of stuff. Lyrically it is still quite ambiguous and I think that's purposefully done so that people can identify with it in their own way. It can't be so direct that you're spelling it out for them, they really need to get something out of it themselves.

This record particularly I looked up to Tom Waits and Nick Cave because there very colourful, almost poetic writers, but they're also very direct. They won't use a big word if they don't have to and I like that. At the same time though i've been a big fan of the Pixies for years and there's a cleverness that comes with Frank Black's lyrics.

Q: I've read previously that "It's Not Okay" and "Prison" are about your relationship with Bert from the used?
A: "It's Not Okay (I Promise)" is the actually the one song on the album about High School. It's a cry for help. "Prison" is more about life on the road. It's about Bert (The Used), my band and all the other bands we've toured with like TBS. It's about the people that you meet on the road that become very special to you.

Q: It's not hard to notice the film references such as John Woo / Tarrantino in your lyrics as well?
A: People always comment that we must watch a lot of movies and to tell you the truth movies inspire me lyrically and they inspire me musically. When we write a song we don't say lets make it a real punk rock song, we say let's make a cowboy song or a cabaret song so when the song first starts it will sound like a cabaret tune from one of the shows.

Q: Are you thinking about the next record now?
A: Someone gave me a piece of really good advice when we first started. He said "stop writing songs for a new record, you write songs that you want to play live. You're a band that first and foremost write songs to play live so just start writing songs for yourself". We've always felt that way so we're never thinking of the next record and that's why we're ahead of the game. By the time we got to pre-production on "Three Cheers..." we were all set to go.

We know what we're doing this time so it's going to be similar to this album, but I think people will still notice the leap. We might even have a ballad on the next record. Within this band you can do anything you want because when it comes down to the five of us playing it will sound like My Chemical Romance. I think this time round I will be a little more direct notions like salvation, retribution, damnation and how the band saved my life. I definitely want to deal with those subjects as opposed to something fictitious.

Q: How do you feel your life would have been if you wouldn't have formed MCR?
A: If I hadn't found this band I would probably still be very unhappy. I would probably still be drinking. I would probably be in a slump. Im 27 now so I would be 27 and felt like I have done nothing. You start to hit that point around 25 and that's right when things started to turn round for me. I'd been feeling lost since I was about 22 because I would always put a lot of pressure on myself, i'd been depressed and the band in many ways was a last ditch effort.

Q: Is it quite hard lyrically when you're contented like you now?
A: It's weird because it doesn't seen to affect our sense of black humour or what we worry about. We're always able to put ourselves right back in those lulls. I'm never able to forget the really bad stuff I went through, but i've found a division between what I do on-stage with the band and what I am in real life. It's really nice for me where I can be happy almost all the day before I go on stage. It's used to be the fact that for 45 minutes before i'd go on-stage I used to act like this f**king lunatic. Now it's like 2 minutes before I'm just hanging out and I get up on-stage and it's like woo woo. I think being sober and relearning how to be a frontman as a sober guy is a new feeling. Now I don't drink, I don't even take cough syrup with alcohol in it. If it's got alcohol or any type of drug in it, I won't go near it.

Teen Titans
With a dedicated legion of fans claiming that their music saves lives, My Chemical Romance may just be rock's superheroes
By JENNY ELISCU

More than ten years of tradition dictates that every night of the summer-long Warped Tour end the same way: In a parking lot crammed full of tour buses, dozens of tattooed and mohawked punk bands gather to eat barbecue, swill beer and chat up the barely legal alterna-chicks who've somehow managed to slip past security. It's Day One of Warped 2005, in Columbus, Ohio, and the party is well under way when the five members of the New Jersey goth-punk quintet My Chemical Romance hop in a white minivan headed on a much more important mission: a trip to Wal-Mart to stock up on diet soda, cereal, horror movies and, God willing, Spider-Man pajama bottoms. As they enter the store, each guy grabs a cart and begins exploring. "There have been tours where we hit a different Wal-Mart almost every night," says singer Gerard Way, 28, who immediately cuts to the left with his little brother, bassist Mikey, 24, to the toy department. Both dressed all in black, the Way brothers prowl up and down the aisles, carefully scrutinizing an assortment of Star Wars action figures. Unmoved by the selection, Gerard steers his cart toward office supplies. "I need one of those plastic magazine racks," he says, "so I can organize my Dungeons and Dragons books."

So it goes with My Chemical Romance: Five teenage comic-book geeks trapped in the bodies of full-grown men who thrash around onstage in matching bondage jackets and ghoulish makeup -- "singing songs that make you slit your wrists," as one lyric goes -- but go to sleep at night on tour-bus bunks made up with Teen Titans bedsheets. They prefer to think of themselves as superheroes rather than rock stars. And, like any respectable superheroes, the members of My Chemical Romance get their own action figures later this year. "I don't think that having a My Chemical Romance action figure will make a kid start his own band," Gerard says. "I like to think it will make him save children from a burning building."

Released last year, My Chem's major-label debut, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, has sold close to 800,000 copies, thanks to two hit singles, "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" and "Helena." The cinematic videos for both songs have made the band unlikely regulars on MTV's Total Request Live and its members -- the Ways, guitarists Frank Iero, 23, and Ray Toro, 28, and drummer Bob Bryar, 24 -- Tiger Beat-style pinups for the Hot Topic generation. And beyond: Green Day, one of My Chem's own idols, brought the group on tour this spring; Pink and John Mayer are fans; and Courtney Love has said that My Chem is twelve-year-old Frances Bean's favorite band.

Their music is a cross between Queen and the Misfits, combining the four-on-the-floor drive of old-school punk with the camp and theatricality of glam. But, ultimately, what has helped My Chem connect isn't just the sound or the look -- though plenty of their fans have taken to wearing heavy red eye shadow in emulation of Gerard. It's the light behind the darkness of their songs that communicates Three Cheers' dual messages: Sometimes the good guys wear black, and sometimes, if all the freaks and geeks rally together, they can change the world. As a result, the most common thing My Chem hears from their fans is "Your music saved my life."

"You see us playing these songs about fictitious gunfights, cowboys, electric chairs, about getting fucked in jail," Gerard says, referring to the jaunty punk cabaret tune "You Know What They Do to Guys Like Us in Prison." "The abstraction is there for a reason. It's for people to get what they want out of it. This band is therapy for us. What we're saying through the performance is 'This can or cannot be therapy for you, too. Either way, we'll still do it.' "

A couple of days before the Warped show in Columbus, Gerard shuffles along Third Avenue in Manhattan, sipping a vanilla soy latte. He's recently chopped his chin-length jet-black hair into a short shag for My Chem's upcoming "Ghost of You" video and has slimmed down significantly since he quit drinking and popping Xanax last year (at his heaviest, he carried nearly 200 pounds on his five-foot-eight-inch frame). Still, when he walks, he hunches his shoulders as if he'd prefer to be invisible.

He makes it unnoticed past a dozen or so teen girls in pink and blue T-shirts waiting in line for a Tyler Hilton show at a downtown club, but a few blocks later we hear some college-age dudes coming up behind us, and Gerard tenses up in anticipation. "You suck!" hollers one, followed by "Emo sucks!" and then one last "You suck!" for good measure. Way shrugs and says, "I was once that exact kid, the one who came into the city from Jersey to hang out on St. Marks Place and act like a punk."

Except for Bryar, who hails from Chicago (and joined the band last year), the guys in My Chem grew up in the working-class New Jersey suburb of Belleville. "It's hard to break out of routines there," says Mikey. "If I wasn't in this band, I'd probably be stuck doing some retail job. We lived near malls, and that's just what you would do. A lot of people I know ended up as, like, a manager at the Gap." Mikey and Gerard -- whose parents, Donna and Donald, are a former hairdresser and an auto-dealer service manager, respectively -- worked an assortment of low-wage jobs together, doing everything from shelving peas in the frozen-foods section at a local supermarket to shelving books at a Barnes & Noble. (It was while racking Irvine Welsh's Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance that Mikey came up with the name for the band.)

Gerard had given up on playing music at around fifteen, after his band booted him because he either could not, or would not, learn to play "Sweet Home Alabama." He turned to his other major passion, drawing superheroes, and ended up studying at the School of Visual Arts in New York. After he graduated in '99, he hit the pavement with his sketches and nearly struck gold while interning at the Cartoon Network, where an exec loved his idea for a show called The Breakfast Monkey, about a flying simian with an accent like Bjork's who was blessed with the ability to make waffles, French toast or any breakfast food appear out of thin air. Way took meetings with production companies and was talking licensing deals. But that was all before September 11th, 2001, which had as profound an effect on Way as it did on anyone who was living or working in New York at the time.

"Something just clicked in my head, and that was when I said, 'Fuck art' for the first time," he says. "I thought, 'Art's not doing anything for you. It's just something on a wall, it's completely disposable, and it's not helping anyone.' And I was like, 'Fuck Breakfast Monkey, because all it's gonna do is line somebody else's pockets.' I felt like I had given my life to art and that it had betrayed me. And then I saw Thursday perform at this club for fifty people, and it changed me."

Gerard reconnected with his old neighborhood buddy Toro after they attended an Iron Maiden show together. They recorded a three-song demo with original drummer Matt Pelissier and then recruited Iero and persuaded Mikey to join their new band. They built a fan base through hypercharged live shows where they would spit in one another's faces or trash their instruments. "We just went out there and tried to destroy things," says Gerard. "I didn't want people to stand there and look at it like it was art. We wanted it to be explosive and cathartic."

Though the band was initially the staging ground for Gerard to "deal with the post-traumatic stress disorder of 9/11, my own shortcomings, being depressed and being suicidal," the inspiration for much of Three Cheers came from the death of his maternal grandmother, Elena Lee Rush, in 2003. "Helena," he says, "is an angry open letter to myself for being on the road so long and missing the last year of her life." Elena and her husband, Arthur (who passed away this spring), lived with the Ways; she taught Gerard how to sing and how to draw, and she even bought My Chem their first van.

Last year, Gerard was convinced that Three Cheers was a concept album about "two lovers who die in the desert in a gunfight. The guy goes to hell and meets the devil, who tells the guy he can only be reunited with his lover if he brings the devil the souls of 1,000 evil men." A year later, Gerard is sober and has a different vision of the album. "There is a pseudoconcept," he now says. "But really it's about two boys living in New Jersey who lost their grandma, and how their brothers in the band helped them get through it."

My Chem have some European dates and their first headlining tour ahead of them this fall, but they have already started writing songs for a new record that Gerard anticipates will still be clever and dark but likely more direct. "There's just so much I want to say about real life now," he says. "We're starting to see the beauty of the world and to truly understand our relationships with other human beings like our loved ones. What's wrong with writing a song about missing somebody instead of vampire assassins? There's a common saying in My Chemical Romance that 'This is bigger than us,' but what I've come to realize is that, at the same time, there's nothing bigger than the lives of the five guys in this band."

SKELETON CREW ONLINE

To whom it may concern,

Hello friends, this is Frank from My Chemical Romance. First of all, I would like to thank you all for helping my dreams come true. I cannot express my undying gratitude for your support of this little band. You have made it possible for four kids from New Jersey and one from Chicago to make a difference in this world. Thank you, thank you, thank you, from the depths of my polluted New Jersey heart, thank you.

Ok, so now that the mushy stuff is out of the way I wanted to tell you about something that's going on in my life. I am clogging up your inbox with junk mail to let you know that I have embarked on a new creative adventure. Over the past few years, I have met lots of extremely talented people… tons of them. The thing is, I have not only become friends with these people, but I have also become a huge fan of the art they create. When that happens, the next logical step is to figure out how to work with them in the best capacity. So I wanted to start a company or companies that would be able to showcase the talents of my friends, my heroes, and the people who inspire me to live each day of my life as if it were my last. What I came up with was Skeleton Crew (skeletoncrewonline.com). Skeleton Crew is a record label, book publisher, and clothing design company. I figured if I was going to do it, I might as well do it all. I have always had a passion for record collecting, especially rare releases. If I'm a fan of the band I have to have it all, it's a sickness really. So Skeleton Crew Records will put out limited edition releases, colored vinyl, picture discs, and things I would want as a record collector. Basically whatever the band wants to do, we will put out. Some of the bands you might have heard of, some of the bands you might not have. The one thing they will all have in common is that I like them, which means they are worth checking out. (I have wanted to start a record label of my own for years, I'm really excited.)

Skeleton Crew Publications will release books written or illustrated by musicians, artists, athletes, and just all around interesting people who have something to say. I want to create a different forum where art and ideas can be presented. With media some of these artists have not experimented with or explored yet. I think this division of Skeleton Crew is the most interesting, and the one to definitely keep your eye on. We will not censor any of the artists, they will have full reign over what they create. (Again the only thing the authors may have in common, is that I am a fan.)

Last, but not least, is Skeleton Crew Clothing. This is not a t-shirt company! I can type it again if you didn't read it the first time…this is not a t-shirt company. I have nothing against t-shirts, some of my best friends wear them, and I enjoy them as well. All I'm trying to say is that Skeleton Crew is a clothing design company; we are in the process of developing a fall/winter line that will involve more than just screen printed t-shirts. You will be able to wear nothing but Skeleton Crew products for weeks straight to any occasion or destination and never think twice about whether your uniform is comfortable, appropriate, or fashionable. The designs are rad, I must say so myself. There are teasers on the website for you right now, but we'll keep you in anticipation of the clothes for a little bit longer.

This is a business that has a greater good in mind, Skeleton Crew will donate a portion of all profits to different charitable organizations, decided upon by the artists we work with. I have a feeling you guys are gonna enjoy what we come up with; at least I hope you do. Skeleton Crew will have a booth on upcoming Warped Tour dates on the East coast. I will drop you guys a short email letting you know when exactly that will be.

Until then, go to the site, skeletoncrewonline.com, you can email us for additional information. So far it's been really fun and hard just developing this project, I can't wait to get things rolling and hear what you guys think. I created Skeleton Crew from my heart and with my friends so I hope you check it out. Thanks for reading, I'll see you at the show.

My Chemical Romance will be shooting their next video for "Helena" in early January in Los Angeles. The details are being worked out now, but they are putting out an open call to all of you to appear in the video. (It is a funeral theme video to be shot in a Church, so you'll need to wear black, understated clothes.). You will need to be available for a few hours on Jan 6, 7 or 8. If you are interested in appearing you will need to be 18 years or older & please email a photo of yourself to this address: mcrvideo@hotmail.com. Be sure to include your name, date of birth, address, phone & email so we can contact you if you are chosen. Those who appear in the video will be paid minimum wage for the hours they are on set. If you are selected, someone will be in touch with you SOON with further details. - NOTE - you must live in the LA area to be considered.
